How We Started

How We Started

While volunteering at a homeless shelter, our founder, Rolanda Finch noticed several children running around. She asked the executive director, “How do they celebrate their birthday?” He explained, because of a lack of resources and funding, nothing is done. Rolanda loves to celebrate her birthday. It’s September 14th and she celebrates during the entire month of September! Rolanda felt these children deserved the same enjoyment she remembered as a child and used her personal funds to create birthday parties in shelters where she volunteered.

The children in the shelter became excited whenever the “birthday lady” arrived to give them a smile on their special day. Unfortunately, the shelter closed after a few months. Rolanda was determined to continue bringing smiles to the lives of children in homeless and domestic violence shelters. In 2014, It’s Your Birthday, Inc. was formed.
